DOS Expands Online Screening to TN / TD Visa Applicants
Starting October 1, 2026, the Department of State will expand its online presence review to cover TN and TD visa application filings submitted at the U.S. Embassy/Consulate. As part of this process, applicants will be required to set the privacy settings of “all of their social media profiles to ‘public’ or ‘open.’”
Pursuant to the DOS’ new mantra that “every visa adjudication is fundamentally a national security decision”, this announcement follows similar vetting procedures that apply now to nearly all temporary non-immigrant visa classifications. DOS claims that these new requirements are necessary to ensure that “applicants do not intend to cause harm to Americans or threaten U.S. interests, and that each applicant can credibly demonstrate eligibility for the visa requested—including a genuine intent to abide by the terms of admission.”
As Canadian citizens are exempt from the DS-160 visa filing process for TN/TDs, this new policy only applies to Mexican citizens filing DS-160 applications for TN/TD visas at the U.S. Embassy/Consulate.
